Seaside

Coming soon to the District. Kel and her Re:Current consignment business (a place two) in the Gilbert Block Building.

Kel, the owner,  pictured in  Re:Current wearables, upcycled resale wardrobe finds from her first location in Tillamook. Kel signed on to become a new business in the Gilbert Block Building on Holladay Drive. She is hoping for a grand opening in May 2024 or early June.

Re:Current is more than just a boutique resale store. It’s where downtown Seaside will come to life with a carefully curated shopping experience that encourages everyone to choose secondhand first!

Re:Current has another location in Tillamook, Oregon, as well.

Corner of Broadway at Holladay.

Enjoy the historical meme on directions to RE:CURRENT.

  • Go down Broadway after turning west off Highway 101 in Seaside.
  • Highway 101 is fondly called the Pacific Coast Highway by locals.
  • At the first stop sign on Broadway, take a moment to enjoy the pocket gardens on the four corners of Broadway Street and Holladay Drive.
  • Turn north, or rather, turn right on Holladay Drive.
  • This is where Beach Books anchors the Gilbert Block Building in downtown Seaside.
  • This is where the former Pallapo Beach store, a Tommy Bahama boutique, was located for years.
  • Go past Seaside Coffee House, a local place to get your caffeine fix on the right or the north.
  • Go past The Cookie Jar Bakery, a yummy, sweet and terrific place on the left or the south.
  • Go past The Whet Spot, a happy local and visitor-gathering place.
  • This is where Mason, Holladay Drive’s most famous rescued street dog, resides.
  • Go just a little way to find the newest Gilbert Block business…
  • Ta-da, the place next to the Whet Spot is RE:CURRENT.

  • Fun fact: Li’l Bayou Cajun Restaurant was housed in this space for years.
  • In the past, way past, like fifteen years ago, the space was Two Guys Burger and Fries.
  • Most recently, the space was used for storage for Peddler’s Row, a favorite treasure trove full of high-end antiques and interior design goods on Broadway Street by Avery Loshcen and Will Perkins.
  • RE:CURRENT is directly across the street from the Natural Lather boutique, a place two location, as its owners have another thriving location in Spokane, WA.
  • Shamous’es Rocks, a top-rated tourist destination, is also across the street.
  • Next door to RE:CURRENT is Yellow Curry Thai Restaurant, a long-time neighborhood favorite.
  • On the corner of Holladay Drive and Ocean Way is a dedicated free parking lot set aside for the Historic Gilbert District.
  • Avery Loshcen and Will Perkins also operated Seaside Antique Mall.
  • The couple were delightful landlords for the Gilbert Block Building for decades.
  • And, too, they were involved with the 4-block renovation of the Historic Gilbert District in the 1980’s.
  • The Historic Gilbert District won a National Main Street award.

The restored commercial area in the heart of Seaside houses some of the city’s oldest buildings and is home to shopping, restaurants, and services. Two city blocks on Broadway, west of Highway 101. Dedicated parking is at Oceanway and Holladay.

Appreciating the reserved parking for the Historic Gilbert District of downtown Seaside.

Dedicated parking is to be found on the corner of Holladay and Oceanway, thanks to the Gilbert Block.

Walk east on Broadway over the Necanicum River, and you’re in a very different world — the oldest part of Seaside, to be exact. Seaside’s mayor from 1912 to 1916, Alexandre Gilbert, rebuilt the four-block Gilbert District at the intersection of Broadway and Holladay Drive after the city’s big fire in 1912. Today the Gilbert District is thriving with vibrant restaurantsart galleriesboutiques, and antique stores. More than 30 local businesses call this historic district home. Here’s how to spend a few hours poking around.

Stroll across the arched Broadway Bridge and see the Gilbert Block Building, est. 1914, and Kirwen Building, est. 1913,  the Wheatley-Desler Building, est. 1914,  the Menzel Building est.1913, old Seaside City jail, est. 1914, and the old Seaside firehouse, est. 1914 on the corner of Highway 101 and Broadway Street.

Map of the Historic Gilbert District of downtown Seaside.

Freshly painted fire hydrants in blue and yellow. Why, you ask?

Although some may be puzzled or others may not have noticed, there’s a reason why the Fire Department paints the fire hydrants with different colored tops (hats). One of the first challenges firefighters face when arriving at a fire scene is finding a suitable water source that meets the gallons per minute (GPM) required to extinguish the fire. Fire hydrants are color-coded to indicate how much water a particular hydrant will provide. This allows for quick decision-making when firefighters are deciding which hydrant to access. To make it easier for firefighters to know what a specific hydrant will supply, the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) recommends that fire departments and water districts follow a set standard of color coding.

NFPA 291 states fire hydrants using public water supply systems should be painted chrome yellow, while their tops and caps should be color coded to indicate the available GPM. Below 500 GPM should be painted red, 500-999 GPM should be orange, 1000-1499 GPM should be green, and 1500 GPM or more should be blue.

So, the next time you’re walking our streets in The Historic District of downtown Seaside or driving our roads, you will know why our fire hydrants are wearing yellow and blue hats.

Just in time for summer, Queen’s has arrived in the district.

This was a fantastic experience. The staff was friendly, and their work was terrific. I had a picture of what I wanted, and they followed it perfectly. Highly recommend coming here!!! One of the best places I have ever gone to! SB

We had a wonderful experience at this salon! The salon is so clean and has a great atmosphere; it’s clear that the owners care about their business and customer experience. If I lived closer, I’d be a monthly regular, but we will definitely visit every time we vacation in Seaside. AN

Beautiful salon with super nice and friendly staff. I went with my sisters and my niece; they did a fantastic job! KB

My sister and I went in this morning and had gel pedicures done we did the luxury package and it was just delightful! The people in there are very very sweet and engaging. We were greeted the moment we walked in and felt very welcome! This was an awesome experience and we will definitely be back!”  CK
